Keepin' It Soxy with Dallas Sock Brand Dead Soxy

I'm a girl who loves her socks. No really. I love my socks. From my younger days donning Easter socks in lace to my basketball knee-high striped Nike socks -- let's just say I truly adore the many ways I can express myself through this ultimate wardrobe staple.

Roberts Wesleyan College Senior Basketball Banquet
No socks here but you get the point. Roberts Wesleyan College Senior b-ball banquet 2004. Yes, fashion girl in flip-flops...gag. But..I was comfortable. ;-)
I met the owners of Dallas-based brand Dead Soxy over coffee at Ascension (of course) following a panel of mine they attended for Dallas Start-Up Week. After some sips of cappuccino and small talk, I learned that co-owners Jason Simmons and Mike Romine were both in corporate America with Mike being a chiropractor. As an entrepreneur, Jason left his corporate gig to pursue development of the Dead Soxy label full-time. After learning of their story, and being both a fashion editor and fellow entrepreneur...I was all in.

Dead Soxy Jason Simmons Mike Romine

After receipt of my Dead Soxy socks "for her", I really wanted to channel what this brand personally meant to me. Mike or Dr. Mike as he is referred to, cleverly came up with the name Dead Soxy and its corresponding hashtag for social media #StaySoxy. So naturally as I thought of socks for women, what would make them sexy? As my brain toyed with the concept and the development of a specialized photo-shoot, I thought, "I wanna have fun. Maybe a Tom Cruise Risky Business-inspired, dance in my socks, girls just wanna have fun type shoot."

Dead Soxy Leah Frazier

Well, after I actually got in the studio with my go-to Dallas photographer, Thomas Garza, the whole concept for me changed. As I draped myself in an over-sized men's business shirt, delicately put on undergarments to match the Dead Soxy grey/pink socks, I began to channel my inner sexy. But...going a step further I ditched the Risky Business concept a minute before the first camera click. It occurred to me. The light bulb goes on.

Dead Soxy Leah Frazier

Nothing is more sexy to a man, than when his girl wears one of his shirts, sports it au naturale, with no make-up, hair tassled, with no effort. So that's what I did. Baring close to all for the sake of fashion, but keeping it classy, here are some shots of how I #StaySoxy. Be sure to check the detail of the socks -- such as how the upper flipped portion reads "Dead Soxy" and on the back of the socks reads "Her". I LOVE IT!

Five Reasons Why Lysse' is a Must for Your Fall Wardrobe

Lysse' has been a brand that has been on my radar ever since I received a pair of their vegan leather ponte "riding" style leggings last year. The materials are high quality, the top band is designed to minimize the mid section "pooch" and most importantly the leggings truly flatter my figure.

Lysse', although recognizable for their leggings, is a brand that also has designer apparel from blouses to wraps to dresses that are also synonymous with comfort and flattering the feminine shape. I decided to try out one of Lysse's control tops and let's just say, I have never felt so comfortable and free. The built-in shaper/control top definitely flattened my stomach, slimmed my waist and allowed the top layer of the top to flow without any bumps or rolls in my appearance.

For those reasons, here are my top 5 reasons why you should invest in Lysse' for your Fall Wardrobe:
  1. Eco-Friendly: It seems like a wide range of brands these days are going for more eco-friendly and cruelty-free clothing options. With Lysse' they use vegan leather (which feels exactly like soft and smooth leather) which tends to be similar to the real thing, and affordable!

2.  Comfortable with Stretch: Need I say more?  Every woman needs this!

3.  Lined with Body Shaping / Control Top Materials: The Damaris short-sleeved top that I'm wearing in the pictures above is lined with a control top which I love. There are several blouses and tops with the Fall collection that have the control top feature and for most women who come to me for personal shopping and styling, this is the top requested item: especially for women who are battling post-pregnancy weight.

4.  Perfect for Layering: The Lysse' collection tops are perfect by themselves or with a moto jacket layer on top or even a creative cardigan sweater. Whatever your preference, these blouses can mix and match with anything.

5.  Built-In Tummy Flattener: Need I say more? The blouses have control top shapers and the leggings have built-in control tops to flatten the tummy as well.  This is a brand after my own heart!

Fashion Find: Caravelle Watches and Susu Handbags

I always tell my clients that accessories are key to the completion of any outfit--and not to be completely overbearing or overdone either. I have a "rule of three" when it comes to accessories so that I don't over-accessorize and completely ruin a perfectly good outfit. (See my article on Examiner.com here for more info on the rule of three.) It's actually an old styling principle but it still holds true today.

In light of my obsession with accessories, I'm giving you guys a peek into the newest family members for my accessories collection: my rose gold Caravelle New York watch and my turquoise Susu Handbags clutch. My Ellie Kai dress provides the perfect background for these two to easily demonstrate why accessories (but not too much) are the key to truly completing an outfit.

Caravelle New York watches are completely affordable ranging anywhere from $59 to $150. I always get compliments on my Caravelle watch because it exudes luxury and is quality made. Rose gold is completely in right now so I wear this watch pretty often.  Check out their selection of fabulous his and hers watches on their website.

Caravelle Rose Gold Chronograph Watch - $135
My Susu Handbag was a definite surprise for me. This sturdy and durable clutch is as simple as it comes, however I receive many compliments on the clutch because of the material and quality--which makes it pop. It's the perfect addition to any outfit and exhibits a great statement without overpowering the outfit. For more information on Susu Handbags, check them out here! I love their handbags and definitely plan on purchasing more.

Experiencing Ellie Kai: A Must for Every Woman's Wardrobe

Just as Diane von Furstenberg was revolutionary for women's fashion in her creation of the iconic wrap dress, I predict and will stand firm by it that Ellie Kai is not too far behind in being one of the top brands to truly fit a woman's body like a glove. When I first experienced Ellie Kai, I was invited to an exclusive trunk show at the Rosewood Crescent Hotel. I had a million things to do that day (as always), so really only had planned to walk in, browse and pick up a lookbook to go through later. Need I say...this did not happen.

Necklace and serpent bracelet: Stella and Dot, Shoes: Nine West (old), Clutch: Susu Handbags, Shades: Banana Republic (old), Rose Gold Watch: Caravelle New York
I chose two colorful prints from the Ellie Kai collection to try on. One was a bold turquoise dress covered in chevron prints and the other was a blend of navy, cream and pinks in chevron prints. The material was as smooth as butter and included nylon to create the perfect stretch over my body. I'm a rather curvy girl with a little junk in my trunk. When I say that every single dress that I tried on, fit me perfectly with no alterations needed, I was completely in awe.

I began to wonder. Why have I never heard of Ellie Kai?  Then I started thinking of my clients...every one of these women needs these dresses in their wardrobe!  The collection has everything from business casual looks to vacation maxis and even blouses and skirts!

What I love most about Ellie Kai and what I really try to embed in each and every one of my clients is the concept of individuality and exclusivity. With an Ellie Kai dress, you get to choose the fabric, choose the color, prints and the style. It would be extremely rare that I would walk up and down the streets of Dallas and see another woman in my exact same dress--something that I adore. On top of the fact that the dresses are custom-made to order, it completely ensures that my dress will fit my body perfectly.

As I predicted earlier, once more women catch on to Ellie Kai, it will be a complete domino effect. Pieces are online and available via trunk shows. For more information on this cutting edge brand, please visit www.elliekai.com.

Throwing Shade: My Top Summer Sunglasses Picks from Sunglass Hut

Anyone who knows me well knows that I have this tiny (well, maybe not tiny), HUGE obsession with sunglasses.  They can be plastic and "one-time use only" sunglasses from a sunglasses vendor at the mall to a pair of Tom Ford's that I've trolled Hautelook for for over a year.  I just LOVE shades. Sidebar: I spotted a pair of Bottega Veneta shades (original retail of $600) that I tried on last year at the actual Bottega Veneta store and now they are at Neiman Marcus' Last Call at Grapevine Mills for $169, plus I have a $25.00 off coupon...be on the lookout for them to make an appearance in an upcoming blog post.  Trolling and patience has its perks people!

Anyways, Sunglass Hut sent me a preview of their 94 Shades of Summer lookbook in honor of the 94 days of summer which featured several different shade styles from different brands. SWOON! I personally REFUSE to hop on the reflective aviator bandwagon that EVERYONE and their mama is hopping on lately, however for your enjoyment I've included a pair in my slideshow below.  I'm personally digging the cat-eyes by Miu Miu...just sayin'!

Anywho, enjoy and feel free to leave me a comment as to which style you like and what you will be rockin this summer! I'd love to hear from you.

The NeoBantu Awakening: A Beautiful Insight

Dallas-based African brand, NeoBantu is more than just bold and colorful prints, playful patterns and all things vibrant. It's a brand that encourages community and culture--and for me, it was an introduction and window to my roots.

Dallas Fashion Blogger Leah Frazier Beauty4Ashes NeoBantu

Bantu of the name "NeoBantu" is a tribe in Africa that lives by the motto "I am because we are."  There are so many powerful things about this statement in and of itself. When I was interviewing NeoBantu co-founder Tendai Tawonezvi for a write-up for DFW Style Daily (see the article here), she candidly described the Bantu culture--one that believes in community all the while celebrating individuality. I instantly became intrigued because it was as if I was attending a class to learn more about myself, my roots and where I am from.
Dallas Fashion Blogger Leah Frazier Beauty4Ashes NeoBantu

As Tendai was describing Africa, the Bantu culture, her adventures in researching current African fashion and trends, I kept mulling over the statement "I am because we are."  How often do we really attribute success and growth based on our connection to community or the fellowship with others?  To me, I immediately began to think of Ecclesiastes 4:12.  This revelation in scripture is how I know that NeoBantu will be an ultimate success.

"And if a man prevail against him that is alone, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken." ~Ecclesiastes 4:12~

The fact that the Bantu community recognizes strength in numbers and thrives off of the fact that we are not self-made by any means--we each deposit and take from each other, is so powerful to me and made me smile from the inside out. Community, culture and fellowship is the recipe for meaningful living and to a balanced life.

Dallas Fashion Blogger Leah Frazier Beauty4Ashes NeoBantu

After my brief history into the background of the brand, Tendai gave me a tour of the showroom. I immediately noticed that I was smiling from ear to ear.  I was instantly in a good mood as I browsed through the clothing, touched the fabrics and conversed with a woman that I genuinely felt was my sister. There's no other way to describe it.  I felt as if the clothes had reached into the depths of my soul, knocked on the door and said "Awaken Leah. Arise."

I looked over to Tendai and naively began to describe just how joyous the fabrics and clothing were making me feel. It was something natural within me that was drawn to them--I was opening the door to another part of myself. I went on to describe to Tendai how playful and vibrant prints can be intimidating to some and how recently I have just stepped outside of the box to mix prints on prints because it was "on trend."

Dallas Fashion Blogger Leah Frazier Beauty4Ashes NeoBantu

The look Tendai gave me was priceless...as if I had defied my African roots. She explained that bold prints, colorful patterns and mixing prints is all that she knows, especially since she is a Zimbabwe native.  So this is not something that is "trendy" or intimidating--this is purely African fashion and what embodies the culture. I immediately became embarrassed--to think that I have been raised culturally to fear prints, patterns, colors and the likes; to associate a negative connotation to something that is so beautiful; to dull my inner African roots to merge into American culture. Thus, the awakening began.

Dallas Fashion Blogger Leah Frazier Beauty4Ashes NeoBantu

I likened this experience to when I first went natural with my hair 3 years ago. We, as African-American females have been trained to dislike our natural hair--that straight is more beautiful, that long length defines beauty, etc. so we damage our hair with permanent relaxer treatments. When I first went natural and started transitioning from relaxed hair to my natural hair, I remember being embarrassed to go out into public with curly roots--again something that society has taught African-American females is negative and unattractive. I fought through these negative associations and immediately begin to re-train my thinking as to what is beautiful.  In doing this, I instantly became angry--to know that we have been trained to despise our hair--something that I have learned over time to be beautiful, unique and definitive. Another awakening.

Dallas Fashion Blogger Leah Frazier Beauty4Ashes NeoBantu

As I exited the NeoBantu showroom, I felt revived, excited. It was just another glimpse into me and why "my black is beautiful." In this moment, I couldn't be more proud of where I'm from and I can't wait to explore more. Everything about this brand is natural and I wish them nothing but eternal success. I thank NeoBantu for letting me test out their apparel, especially this colorful hi-low skirt for my photoshoot. I need to gradually merge into the prints on prints, but I subtly paired the NeoBantu skirt with an animal print belt and shoes to tap into my African side.  I'm a creature of comfort so I casually tucked a cotton tank into the skirt for a completed look.

This Chic is Bananas, No Really She Is: Shirin Askari Spring Summer Collection Tee

I was first introduced to Dallas designer and previous Project Runway Season 6 contestant Shirin Askari as I toured the different showrooms during Market Week at Dallas Market Center. Shirin showed us her new Spring/Summer 2014 collection which included a ton of colorful prints and patterns and then I saw this shirt "This Chic is Bananas"...which stuck out like a sore thumb but I loved it! When you're at the showroom, it's typically for buyers or retailers to purchase apparel..not just regular ole Joe Shmoe's like you and me to go in and buy.  So I left the showroom with this shirt on my mind.

Shirin Askari Leah Frazier Dallas Fashion Blogger Beauty4Ashes This Chic Is Bananas
Yes, I'm sitting on a teddy bear in the middle of the park..straight randomness! / T-shirt, Shirin Askari / Skirt, H&M / Studded Heels, Nine West (old)
Fast forward to several weeks ago, when Front Door Fashion announced that Shirin was going to have a trunk show at their showroom. SCORE! I already knew I was buying this shirt. It totally explains me to a "T". All of my friends know that I am completely cray...or bananas as either Rachel Zoe or the shirt would explain it.

Shirin Askari Leah Frazier Dallas Fashion Blogger Beauty4Ashes This Chic Is Bananas

So I bought the shirt and while it was a splurge for a basic tee, you really can't beat the quality and the softness of this t-shirt.  It's not 100% cotton so I don't have to worry about it shrinking and only getting one use out of it.  Also--I probably should have gotten the tee in a size smaller...it's super roomy, but hey...just in case I fatkid it up and gain weight, I have room, right?

Shirin Askari Leah Frazier Dallas Fashion Blogger Beauty4Ashes This Chic Is Bananas

It's easily paired with jeans or with a leather studded skirt like I have on.  Put on a colorful bauble necklace to add color and you're good to go!

Anyways, check the Shirin Askari collection out and let me know if you're feeling the newest addition to my t-shirt collection.

Color Collision: Latino Fashion Week at Sisu Uptown Resort

I was honored to be attending and covering Latino Fashion Week on May 1, 2014 at Sisu Uptown Resort in Dallas. So what do you wear to an event that is outdoors, coined "fashion week" and surrounded by a swank and posh pool?  Well here's what I came up with.  I wanted to be colorful, vibrant and cool. I engaged in a little peek a boo action with my bra peeking through my sheer blouse--but all is fair in love and fashion right? Fashion is fun, fearless and all about taking risks. I topped my look off with this colorful and flirty bauble necklace by Prima Donna and I was just one big explosion of color--but they all ended up complimenting each other nicely.  I recommend trying these types of blends out if you tend to be timid with colors...you might just surprise yourself.

Going GaGa Over Gap's New Lived In Collection

So Vogue graciously sent me one of the new t-shirts from the Gap's new "Lived In" collection along with a gift card to buy a pair of Gap jeans and asked me to style it.  First off--can I just say...that I know it's just a t-shirt but really...it's one of my favorite tees.

I'm wearing a pink "lived in" pocket tee. It is super comfortable, long...and I love that it is super light...which allows your skin to breathe.  This is perfect for the spring and summer and also in the cooler seasons for layering.  I am in love with this tee and headed to the nearest Gap to buy several more colors.

Let's talk jeans.  I picked out the Gap "always skinny skimmer" jeans.  Since I'm tall I rolled the ends for a more casual look. They have the extra stretch...because I have a little something-something in the back AND I feel as though they do slim down my thighs.  They are super comfortable and I don't have to jump or wiggle in them when I'm putting them on in the morning. (Ladies...you know what I'm talking about)

Top this look off with my newest pair of sandals from Shoedazzle and I'm off for a walk in Highland Park Dallas, stylishly and comfortably. By the way, "city sandals", are the newest thing in shoe trends right now.  They're called city sandals because the heel is chunkier and you're supposed to be able to walk around the city all day in them.  Ummm...don't know about all of that, but the sandals are super cute!

Up Close and Personal With Courtney Kerr

I was so privileged to have been only one of a handful of hand-selected press to attend the "Courtney Loves Dallas" premiere at LOOK Cinemas on December 5, 2013. Although "Ice-Maggedon" was slowly making its way into Dallas, I drove through sleet to go to the premiere (I'm a Bravo TV-aholic so what can I say?) and to obviously see and interview Courtney Kerr. To read my interview click here.

Now....since I am in the fashion circle and on the scene in Dallas...there are many times where I will sit down at shows a seat or two from Courtney or attend special blogger events with Courtney but never have we actually talked face to face.  Can I just say....that she and Tori are hilarious???  Like seriously...they have both been adopted into the family as my home-girls...they just don't know it yet.

Tori Gonzales, Me and Courtney Kerr at the premiere of Courtney Loves Dallas at Look Cinemas on December 5, 2013.  Photo Credit: Thomas Garza Photography

Tori totally tried to jack me for my Kate Spade handbag but I wasn't having it. I told her she could cop one too for $90 at Nordstrom Rack. But in all seriousness, I was just touched with how down to earth Courtney was and the fact that through all of the fame, she still sticks close to the friends that have been there with her since day 1.

Tori Gonzales, best friend of Courtney Kerr and co-star of "Courtney Loves Dallas" cracking me up...I think at this point she was telling me..."Let's not talk about me...let's talk about you...and that handbag!" (See a better pic of my fabulous handbag in another one of my blog post's by clicking here.) Oh yeah...and all that hair is MINE OH MINE! / Photo Credit: Thomas Garza Photography
She is also a true testament to the fact God can change your life in an instant. Courtney was in corporate America doing like most of us bloggers...blogging on the side.  I can hardly imagine that she knew that she would be in this place right now.  All of that to say...don't get down on your luck or think that God has forgotten about you. In the blink of an eye He can elevate you and give you so much provision that you are just amazed. Just keep believing and pressing forward.

I pray that Courtney remains humble throughout it all.  This is the second interview that I have done with Courtney and she has remained the same.  Last interview I had with Courtney she said that she prefers to do most of her PR so that she can retain control of her own image and how she is portrayed. You have to respect her hustle.

Me interviewing both Tori Gonzales and Courtney Kerr / Photo Credit: Thomas Garza Photography
All in all, being there with Courtney was first of all an honor...that Plan B PR thought that I was "special" enough to be one of the select press individuals there to interview the new reality star.  But overall, I gained so much motivation for myself...to keep pushing...to know that what God has for me is coming...and that I need to be prepared...because in an instant, your life can change in the blink of an eye.  Will you be ready when He elevates your life to the next level? How are you preparing yourself? Have you prayed for humility and that His will be done?  If not, these are the questions that need to be asked and ultimately answered.

Blessings,

Leah J.

Can I Act "Hollywood" Now? I'm on Vogue.com!

Proverbs 29:23 - A man's pride will bring him low, But the humble in spirit will retain honor.

So everyday when I wake up or even when I'm in my car I always pray to God that I continue to stay humble, to stay grounded.  It's hard when I'm getting boxes and boxes of fashion and beauty products sent to me everyday or this comped and that comped to not get full of myself.  When I think about the blood, sweat and tears I have put into fashion for the last 4 years, it's hard not to want to take all of the credit and think that I've gotten here on my own.  But as I continue to reflect on the verse above and at the end of the day I circle back to the thought that everything I do, everything I am is all for His glory.

Today was a big feat for us (me and God).  I was featured on Vogue.com.  I had a great shoot with an amazing photographer, Thomas Garza displaying Fall looks.  To see my blog name "Beauty 4 Ashes" on Vogue.com literally just made me pause.  I want people to question what it means...I want people to come to my blog out of curiosity...whatever it takes to redirect people to Him.

With all of my personal goals with fashion and with all of the distractions of getting invites to this show or that show, so and so put you on their VIP list or here's a bag full of luxury items just cause...I want to let all my friends and family members know not to have any worries.  Leah's not going to go and get "Hollywood" anytime soon. My purpose through HIM is much bigger than all of this.

But.....if someone wants to put me at the Chef's table feeding me and my "plus one" a five-course meal while I sit in my Jimmy Choos and sip Veuve Clicquot, I won't complain! haha (Just kidding...kind of)

Fall's A'Comin'...so "Fall" in love with Clarks

So I was one of 25 bloggers chosen by Vogue to show how I would style the new Lida Sayer boots from Clark's Fall collection.  I received my boots as a gift from Vogue last week and chose my look below to show how I would style the boot.  Since I live in Texas, I mixed shorts with a short-sleeved sweater to make the outfit "Fall-inspired" but appropriate for Texas.  Since the boot had gold detailing on the buckle and towards the top of the boot, I really wanted to draw attention to these features which is another reason why I chose to wear shorts.  The neutral colors are a great balance for Fall along with my teal pop of color shown with my bangles.  For  more style inspiration with Clarks, check out the photos below! (All photos were taken by Thomas Garza and my make-up was done by Melanie Ann.  Sunnies by Kate Spade....Sweater, Belt and Shorts by Express)

My ad creation for the Clark's Fall shoe collection created through the Vogue Influencer's Network style statement tool, pretty cool huh?
